Among the many ministries the members of Springfield Assembly support is The Haven of Rest Ministries. Haven of Rest Ministries is located on East Market Street in Akron. It is a compassion ministry that focuses on providing food, clothing, and shelter to those in need. They are a Christ-centered ministry that offers the hope and love of Jesus Christ. One of the primary ways they do this is through a discipleship available for men ages 18 to 36. This free program lasts 8 months to one year and helps men develop in their walk with God.

On March 12 and 14, the Haven of Rest celebrated 76 years of serving those in need and offering the hope of the gospel. The celebration included a dinner at Hartville Kitchen, where people could gather to learn more about the ministry, celebrate their mission, and offer their support. The ministry’s mission for this past year has been, “Change Hearts. Change Lives. One Story at a Time.” On these evenings, members of the Haven of Rest team had the opportunity to share some of the personal ways this mission has been accomplished in the past year.

Jim Cole, who is a member of Springfield Assembly, has been working at the Haven of Rest for the past 19 years and is currently the director of the men’s department. He shared that he had initially started out volunteering at the Haven after going on a tour of the facility in high school. God called him into missions when he was a teenager and as he grew in his walk with the Lord, God revealed to him that he was called to missions locally. It became clearer as time went on that he was specifically called to serve at the Haven of Rest. Jim described the Haven of Rest as, “A home missions organization, ministering to your friends, family, and neighbors.”

There are already many members of Springfield Assembly who volunteer at the Haven of Rest; however, more volunteers and opportunities for service are always welcomed. The Haven of Rest gladly receives the help of volunteers, donations, and the talents which people have to offer to their mission. They also covet the prayers of people for both the people in need who seek help at their mission and those who serve at the mission.
