Christina (Sammons) Sommers was a kind, loving, and beautiful woman. As an adult fighting the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) disease* since the age of 2, she spent many months and holidays at Akron Children’s Hospital. (Children’s hospital is the main hospital for adult CF patients.)

During one of her hospital stays, she had a vision to bring joy to the other adult CF patients. On December 15, 2014, Christina shared her passion on her Facebook page. She asked if family & friends would join her in a fundraising campaign to bring joy to the adult CF patients over the Christmas holiday. She remembered herself feeling very down one Christmas. It was a year she would never forget. While she was laying in her hospital bed, away from her husband and children, she recalled feeling as though the holiday was just another day. Santa came for the young ones, but there were no surprise meals, gifts, volunteer visits, or anything special for the adult patients. Even the empty hallways were apparent in the CF wing. She felt lonely and isolated. But the heaviness in her heart created a desire to do something about the situation. She wanted to hold a fundraiser to purchase gifts for these patients so that they would experience a different Christmas day–one filled with love and joy. Spending so much time in the CF wing of the hospital, she was very familiar with what others, like herself, often needed and enjoyed. She was determined to make this happen. The day after Christina had the vision for this fundraiser, she unexpectedly went home to be with Jesus.

Comfort from Christina

As an adult fighting the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) disease* since the age of 2, she spent many months and holidays at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Christina left a legacy of using every breath, no matter how difficult, to support and love her friends and family.

Christina’s passion led her family and friends to create “Comfort from Christina.” This ministry provide iPads with monthly subscriptions to Netflix and Hulu as well as online magazines for the patients to enjoy. “Go Bags” are filled with the comforts of home–all the extras that you won’t find in the hospital. New therapeutic pillows, hand-sewn pillow cases, super soft blankets, fans, and name brand toiletries are just a few of the items placed into these “Go Bags.” A small gift card to a nearby restaurant allows the patients to get a break from hospital food and enjoy local favorites.

Comfort from Christina would like to express their heartfelt thanks to their wonderful supporters and volunteers. Christina’s dream could not be possible without their faithful assistance, which brightens up the days of teen & adult patients and allows them to feel loved throughout the year!

*Cystic Fibrosis is a terminal hereditary disorder affecting the lungs and pancreas. It causes the production of abnormally thick mucus, leading to the blockage of the pancreatic ducts, intestines, and bronchi and often resulting in respiratory infection, and decline in lung function. It has been said that having Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is essentially like slowly drowning in one’s own mucus.
